Houston's Halloween Weekend: a $5 Rooftop Foam Party, a Symphony in Costume, Blacklight Yoga Tonight and Lucha Libre on Sunday

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and Houston's weekend runs four ways at once - family foam in the morning, costumed orchestras, a $2,000 costume contest at night, and Dia de los Muertos wrestling to close it.

Houston's Halloween Weekend: a $5 Rooftop Foam Party, a Symphony in Costume, Blacklight Yoga Tonight and Lucha Libre on Sunday (SPACE CITY DAILY)

HOUSTON - Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and Houston venues have built a full weekend around it, according to Visit Houston's Halloween guide. The family end of Saturday starts downtown and at Jones Hall: the Houston Symphony's Haunted Halloween concerts run at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., with the orchestra performing in full costume and in-hall trick-or-treating for children who come dressed up, while across downtown the Skylawn rooftop hosts a Halloween Foam Party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with purple-and-orange foam machines, family-friendly music and costume contests for $5, held rain or shine. The Houston Arboretum offers the quieter version at 1 p.m.: Pumpkin Planters, a class for ages 5 and up planting native species in a pumpkin container.

The weekend's downtown anchor is the former post office building on Franklin Street, whose four-day run of events Secret Houston catalogued. Tonight, Friday, it hosts blacklight yoga at 8 p.m. - a 60-minute class led by Candice Quino of Black Swan Yoga with DJ Hiram, $25, bring your own mat and wear neon. Saturday night turns adult: an 18-and-over party with lasers and haze in the X Atrium, ending in a costume contest that pays $2,000 to first place, judged by local media personalities - and because clocks fall back at 2 a.m., the night carries an extra hour.

Sunday closes the weekend on the other holiday. The same atrium hosts Cinco Luchas, a Dia de los Muertos lucha libre night with wrestlers from Houston and Mexico, the crowd invited to come in face paint, masks or wrestling gear, and food and margaritas served through the night. Beyond downtown, Visit Houston's listings run from Boo on the Boardwalk at Kemah, on its October weekends, to Galaxy Frights at Space Center Houston. With the station's live feed still giving Saturday a 47 percent rain chance, the foam party's rain-or-shine billing may be the weekend's most honest promise - and costumes that can survive a shower remain the prudent pick for neighborhood trick-or-treating as well.
