'The Penalties Are Ridiculous': Ryans Rips Texans' Eight Flags in Overtime Loss to Giants

Houston committed eight penalties for 80 yards in Sunday's 27-21 overtime loss to the Giants — and is now averaging more than eight flags a game. 'The Penalties Are Ridiculous': Ryans Rips Texans' Eight Flags in Overtime Loss to Giants (SPACE CITY DAILY)

The Houston Texans' 27-21 overtime loss to the New York Giants on Sunday came with a familiar problem attached: penalties. Houston committed eight of them for 80 yards, ClutchPoints reported, and the Texans are now averaging more than eight flags per game through the first seven weeks of the season.

Head coach DeMeco Ryans did not soften it afterward. "The penalties are ridiculous. It keeps happening, over and over again, so we gotta find a way to fix it or get different people in so we don't have the same mistakes over and over again," Ryans said, in remarks reported by ClutchPoints. The penalties along the offensive line drew particular attention in his postgame comments.

The flags compounded a game Houston had twice within reach. The Texans tied the game late, got the ball first in overtime and failed to score, and New York won it on its ensuing possession. C.J. Stroud completed 17 of 28 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns, Woody Marks led Houston's rushing with 19 carries for 66 yards in the workload figures published in the report, and Dalton Schultz topped the receivers with five catches for 45 yards.

Ryans, in his fourth season, has taken Houston to the playoffs three times, and the Texans are trying to shake off a poor start to 2026. They get a bye next week to work on the problem before resuming on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers on November 8, according to the report.
