Texans Take Their Bye Week With Hunter's Top Grade on Defense and an Offense Still Searching

Danielle Hunter was Houston's brightest defender in Sunday's 27-21 overtime loss to the Giants - an 82.0 PFF grade, a sack and two quarterback hits - but the Texans go into their bye week with 84 rushing yards, a stalled overtime possession and a running game they still have to find.

Texans Take Their Bye Week With Hunter's Top Grade on Defense and an Offense Still Searching (SPACE CITY DAILY)

The Houston Texans were expected to have the edge at home, but the New York Giants pulled off a 27-21 overtime win on Sunday - and the grades now published from the game tell a split story. Defensive end Danielle Hunter was Houston's brightest defensive performer: an 82.0 overall defensive grade from Pro Football Focus, the best among the listed Texans defenders, with a 79.9 pass-rush grade, a 67.5 run-defense grade and a 71.2 tackling grade, plus one sack and two quarterback hits.

Will Anderson Jr. graded 69.2 overall and 70.9 as a pass rusher and was credited with six quarterback hurries, but he had no sacks - and the report's verdict was that Houston's pressure did not translate into enough game-changing stops, as the defense gave up critical runs and allowed the Giants to win in overtime. One strong individual performance, it noted, cannot cover for that.

On offense, C.J. Stroud finished 17 of 28 for 153 yards and two touchdown passes without a turnover, and his late scoring connection with Xavier Hutchinson tied the game with 52 seconds left. But the offense went three-and-out on its first overtime possession, handing the Giants the opportunity that won it. Woody Marks led Houston with 66 rushing yards on 19 carries, and the Texans finished with only 84 rushing yards on 25 attempts, with penalties and short-yardage failures stalling drives. Tank Dell's return after his long recovery was a bright spot - one catch for 43 yards, a glimpse of what he might add.

Houston now uses its bye week to regroup, review its offensive approach and get healthier. The assignment the file leaves is plain: find a more dependable running game, and help Stroud generate consistent production before late-game pressure becomes a weekly problem.
