The Texans Are 2-5. Their Quarterback Is Fourth in the NFL in Passing Yards. The Bye Week Has to Reconcile Those Two Facts. (SPACE CITY DAILY)

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans entered their bye week at 2-5, and the strangest part of their season is standing in the middle of it. C.J. Stroud has thrown for 1,867 yards, 11 touchdowns and just one interception through seven games - a stat line that ranks him fourth in passing yards among NFL quarterbacks through seven games, per Pro Football Reference, behind only Matthew Stafford (1,989), Jordan Love (1,958) and Kirk Cousins (1,877), and ahead of Dak Prescott (1,851), Jared Goff (1,788), Drake Maye (1,784), Brock Purdy (1,748) and Patrick Mahomes (1,474).

The split between the quarterback and the record runs through his game log. Stroud's biggest passing day - 353 yards against Cincinnati in Week 2 - came in a 20-6 loss. His 347 yards against Dallas in Week 4 came in a 34-30 loss. His most complete game, 312 yards with three touchdowns and a 116.3 passer rating against Jacksonville in Week 6, produced a 34-31 win. Houston has lost four games by narrow margins, which is the profile of a team whose problem is finishing, not talent - and it is why the front office has stayed in buy mode, acquiring Marvin Harrison Jr. to give Stroud another weapon rather than selling at the deadline.

The bye is the repair window. The offense gets two weeks to work on protection and timing with a reshaped receiver room - Jaylin Noel expected to miss the rest of the season, Tank Dell just back from 673 days away - before the schedule softens into the Chargers on November 8, then the Browns and the Colts. There is also a longer game being played: Houston and Stroud agreed to postpone extension talks until after the season, and general manager Nick Caserio has indicated he expects a deal in the offseason. If Stroud keeps producing at a top-four level while the wins arrive, his negotiating position strengthens with every week. The bye week's job is to make sure the wins do arrive.
