Weekend Traffic in Houston: Polk Street and Four Downtown Cross Streets Are Closed, the I-10 HOV Lanes Stay Shut, and the East Sam Houston Tollway Is Closed Until 5 A.M. Monday
Downtown's convention-district grid carries the heaviest closures this weekend, the Katy Freeway's HOV link to downtown is gone until 2027 and 2028, and the east side's tollway closure runs all weekend. Here is the map before you go.

HOUSTON - The weekend's traffic story starts downtown, on the convention-district grid, where five street segments are closed for the district's transformation work, according to Houston First Corporation's current closure list. Polk Street is closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic between Chartres Street and Jackson Street. Chenevert Street is closed in all lanes between Bell Street and Polk Street, and Jackson Street is closed in all lanes between Bell and Polk as well. Clay Street is closed in all lanes between Hamilton Street and Jackson Street, and Leeland Street has two lanes closed between Hamilton Street and LaBranch Street.
Drivers coming into downtown from the northbound Eastex Freeway side are directed to exit at West Gray and take Pease Street or St. Joseph Parkway instead. Vehicular traffic on Avenida de las Americas is restricted to Hilton valet only, the Avenida South Garage demolition is complete, and the replacement 1,000-space garage at Bell and Chenevert is under construction. Anyone heading downtown for Halloween weekend events should build the detours in before leaving, not at the barricades.
On the freeways, the closure with the longest shadow is not a weekend item at all: the Interstate 10 HOV lanes linking downtown with the Katy Freeway closed on October 9 and are not coming back soon. The eastbound HOV lane from Katy closes at Studemont Street with reopening estimated in fall 2027; the westbound lane from downtown closes at Franklin Street with reopening estimated in summer 2028, TxDOT has said, as part of the $407 million White Oak Bayou elevation project. Houston TranStar also lists an active lane reduction on westbound I-10 near Studemont tied to the same work, so carpools and bus riders should expect the mainlanes to carry the load.
And on the east side, the closure the station has carried since Friday evening stands: the East Sam Houston Tollway is closed from Pine Street to SH 225 from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday. All scheduled closures can change with weather or emergencies; check Houston TranStar's live map before any cross-town trip this weekend.
