Father Delivering Diapers Opens Fire at Northwest Houston Apartment: Grandmother Killed, Infant Critical, Police Say (SPACE CITY DAILY)

HOUSTON - A diaper drop-off ended in gunfire Saturday evening in northwest Houston, and a family is split between a morgue and a hospital. Houston police said a father who arrived at an apartment in the 7700 block of Willow Chase Boulevard to bring diapers to his infant child's mother opened fire inside the home around 7:35 p.m., fatally shooting the baby's grandmother and critically wounding the baby before taking his own life.

According to police, an argument broke out between the man and the child's 19-year-old mother, and he drew a firearm. Investigators said he shot the 19-year-old's 40-year-old mother in the back and then shot his infant child in the abdomen. The young mother was not injured and managed to rush the wounded infant outside the apartment to safety.

Arriving officers found the suspect inside the apartment, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Houston Police Lt. Pulido said officers performed CPR on the 40-year-old woman and applied a chest seal before paramedics arrived. Houston Fire Department paramedics took both victims to a nearby hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead on arrival. The infant remains in critical condition.

The Houston Police Department's Homicide Division is investigating. Police have not released the names of the victims or of the gunman, pending notification of family - and, in keeping with that, this report carries no names. What led to the argument, and what happened in the moments before the first shot, are questions investigators have not yet answered publicly.
