Texans at the Bye: 2-5, Third in the AFC South, and a Second Half That Still Has a Door Open
Houston's bye-week math is honest - tied with Indianapolis at 2-5, behind Jacksonville, Tennessee last at 1-6 - and its next game, November 8 at the Chargers, starts the climb or closes it.

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans spend Halloween weekend the way 2-5 teams do: watching everybody else. Houston is on its Week 8 bye, and the AFC South picture it returns to is unforgiving but not finished - the Texans sit third in the division, tied with the Indianapolis Colts at 2-5 behind Jacksonville, with the Tennessee Titans last at 1-6, in Athlon Sports' bye-week division roundup published October 30.
The roundup's case for hope is the schedule: a softer second half keeps Houston's playoff hopes alive, in Athlon's assessment, and the reset opportunity is real - C.J. Stroud and head coach DeMeco Ryans get the bye to regroup before the season's second half begins. The case against needs no embellishment: at 2-5, with a winless home record already in the books this fall, Houston has spent its margin for slow starts, and every remaining loss narrows the wild-card arithmetic further.
The return is set: Sunday, November 8, at the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium, a 3:05 p.m. Central kickoff on the Texans' official schedule, followed by Cleveland on November 15 and Indianapolis at home on Thursday, November 19. The bye gives Houston health, film and one quiet weekend. What it cannot give is another mulligan - the second half has to start in Inglewood.
