Sen. Chris Murphy Hospitalized After a Stroke; His Office Expects a Full Recovery
Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, 53, felt numbness in his arm at his son's hockey game on Saturday, was diagnosed with a stroke at a local hospital and was transferred to Johns Hopkins. His chief of staff says he is awake, alert and responding well, and that his doctors are optimistic he will make a full recovery.

WASHINGTON - Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke and is expected to make a full recovery, his team announced Sunday. The 53-year-old senator began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending his son's hockey game, his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said in a statement carried by CNN and Reuters.
Murphy was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had experienced a stroke, and he was transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for further monitoring, Herwitt said. 'He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment. The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,' she said.
Murphy has served in the Senate since 2013 and previously represented Connecticut's 5th Congressional District in the House. CNN described him as a leading progressive voice in Congress on issues including affordable health care and gun safety, whose name has been floated as a possible contender in a broad 2028 presidential primary field. He is not on the ballot in Tuesday's midterm elections.
Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, who suffered a stroke during his own 2022 campaign, said he hoped Murphy would enjoy 'a full and speedy recovery,' writing on X that, as someone who survived a near-fatal stroke, he understood how much it changes a life. President Donald Trump, arriving in Iowa on Sunday, told reporters he was 'surprised' by the news and would consider reaching out to the senator at the right time, CNN reported.
