Chainsaw Carving and Vacuum-Sealed Treat Bags: Free Halloween DIY Pop-Up Runs Saturday and Sunday at Kemah Boardwalk (SPACE CITY DAILY)

Kemah Boardwalk adds a tool-shed twist to Halloween weekend. VEVOR, the home-improvement brand that opened a 32,000-square-foot flagship store in Houston in March, is running a free Halloween DIY pop-up at the boardwalk's Main Plaza Star from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1, the company announced. Admission is free and no registration is required.

The event is built in three zones, according to the announcement. In the Chainsaw Zone, professional lumberjacks compete in speed-cutting races and carving contests — pumpkin carving and wood sculptures — at scheduled showtimes, while a supervised DIY station lets visitors decorate small wooden pieces into house-number signs, coasters and other keepsakes. The company says chainsaws are operated only by professional carvers, with trained personnel overseeing the cutting area. In the Vacuum Sealer Zone, visitors collect slime, water beads and small Halloween gifts from a claw machine and seal them into custom gift bags. A third zone holds oversized pumpkin installations, photo spots and a product showcase.

The prize lineup features more than 30 VEVOR products, including gas chainsaws, chamber vacuum sealers, bread makers and ovens, plus hundreds of smaller giveaways, the company said — about $8,000 in prizes in total. "People shouldn't need a professional budget to get tools they can rely on," brand director Gavin Wu said in the announcement. "This Halloween event gives visitors a chance to see that performance in action and explore what they can create."

The pop-up is one more stop on a crowded Houston Halloween Saturday that also includes the final day of Zoo Boo, the Children's Museum's BOOseum and Movies at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Families heading to Kemah should expect boardwalk crowds through the afternoon; the event runs rain or shine, according to event listings.
