BARC-O-WEEN: Houston's City Shelter Waives Adoption Fees for Halloween Saturday (SPACE CITY DAILY)

Houston's city animal shelter is spending Halloween trying to empty kennels. BARC hosts BARC-O-WEEN on Saturday, October 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 3300 Carr Street near Northside, with free entry and one especially good reason to stop by: adoption fees are waived for the day, thanks to the Houston BARC Foundation, according to Houston on the Cheap's Halloween Day guide. The first 75 adopters also receive swag.

The event is built for families who may not be ready to adopt, too. Visitors will find trunk-or-treating, Halloween treats for kids and for pets, local vendors and community organizations, the guide said. Costumes are encouraged for humans and animals alike.

A waived-fee day matters at a municipal shelter, where every adoption opens a kennel for the next animal coming in. Anyone already thinking about a dog or cat has an extra reason to arrive early on Saturday — the swag cutoff is the first 75 adopters, and the most popular animals at fee-waived events tend to go fast.

BARC-O-WEEN is one stop on a crowded Houston Halloween Saturday that also includes the final day of Zoo Boo, the Children's Museum's Monster Mayhem and Space Center Houston's Galaxy Frights. Families heading to Carr Street should verify last-minute details with the shelter before they leave home.
