Is There School on Election Day? For Houston ISD, Yes - Classes Are in Session on Tuesday, and the Next Day Off Is Friday
It is the No. 2 search in America this morning, and Houston families are asking it too. In Houston ISD, the adopted 2026-27 calendar puts no break on Tuesday, Nov. 3: classes run as normal on Election Day, many campuses double as vote centers, and the district's next no-classes day is the staff development day on Friday, Nov. 6.

HOUSTON - The question 'is there school on election day' is the No. 2 trending search in the United States on Monday morning, according to the Google Trends board read by this desk - and for Houston's largest district, the answer is yes. Houston ISD's adopted 2026-27 calendar lists its no-classes days for the fall as Labor Day, staff professional-development days on Sept. 21 and Oct. 9, and Thanksgiving recess from Nov. 23-27. Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, is not on that list: classes are in session.
The district's next day off actually lands later the same week - Friday, Nov. 6 is a staff professional-development day with no classes, the calendar shows. So a Houston family planning the week faces a normal school Tuesday, a normal Wednesday and Thursday, and then a three-day weekend for students starting Friday.
School being in session does not keep campuses out of the election: Harris County's Election Day vote-center list is full of public schools, and the county's countywide model lets any registered Harris County voter cast a ballot at any vote center, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. A parent can drop off a student in the morning and vote at a campus - their own child's or any other - the same day.
One caution belongs in every version of this answer: calendars are set district by district. Houston ISD's calendar is the one read in full for this story; families in the suburban districts around Harris County should check their own district's calendar before assuming Tuesday looks the same - and every family can check its vote center and hours at HarrisVotes.com before the morning rush.
