A Comets Clip Names 2027 Dates - a December Schedule, an April 12 Draft, a May 1 Start - and the League Says the Start Is Not Confirmed
A Houston Comets front office representative's October 30 clip laid out next season's calendar, including a May 1 season start and a home opener at Toyota Center; a league spokesperson, via Front Office Sports, confirms the April 12 draft date but says no regular-season start date is confirmed.

The Houston Comets are back in the WNBA after almost two decades, and their front office may have handed fans next season's calendar early. In a clip that made the rounds on social media on October 30, a Comets front office representative said the WNBA should release the 2027 schedule somewhere between early and mid-December, that April 12 will be the WNBA draft, and that teams will start reporting to training camp on the first of May - which she described as the opening of the season. "We feel very confident that we will open the season at home at Toyota Centre. So mark your calendars for that first weekend," she said in the clip, as reported by EssentiallySports.
The league's position, as relayed by Front Office Sports reporter Colin Salao citing a league spokesperson, is narrower: "The 2027 draft will be on April 12, but there is no confirmed start date yet for the 2027 regular season, per league spokesperson. A May 1 season start date is not confirmed, contrary to what the Comets say here," Salao wrote on X. So the draft date in the clip checks out; the May 1 start, the December schedule release and the home-opener confidence remain the Comets' account, not the league's confirmed calendar.
A May 1 start would be genuinely new. EssentiallySports notes the last five WNBA seasons tipped off on May 8, May 16, May 14, May 19 and May 6 - never as early as May 1. Broadcaster Robin Lundberg, reacting to the clip, pointed at the structural reason an earlier start is plausible: the league announced in June that the regular season expands from 44 games to 50 beginning in 2027, the most in the league's history, and the current collective bargaining agreement allows a potential further expansion to 52 games by 2029.
Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, in the league's June announcement, said demand for the WNBA has never been greater and that expanding to a 50-game season reflects the momentum across the league. Houston's piece of that expansion is the Connecticut franchise's relocation, which restores the Comets name to the city that won the league's first four championships. What Houston fans can circle today is April 12 for the draft; everything else in the clip awaits the league's own announcement, expected - if the Comets' representative is right - in December.
