Harris County Voter-Roll Cancellations Tripled This Year After a Delayed Cleanup, Records Show

The county canceled 7,942 registrations flagged for investigation from January through July - three times the same months of 2025 and its highest such total since 2014. Officials say it is routine maintenance that back-to-back elections forced them to postpone, then catch up on.

Harris County Voter-Roll Cancellations Tripled This Year After a Delayed Cleanup, Records Show (SPACE CITY DAILY)

HOUSTON - Harris County canceled nearly 8,000 voter registrations in the first seven months of 2026 for a reason the state lists only as "investigation" - about three times as many as in the same months last year, according to an ABC13 analysis of Texas Secretary of State records reported by the Texas Gazette.

The Secretary of State publishes a monthly report showing how many registrations each of Texas' 254 counties canceled and why. Harris County's investigation cancellations numbered 7,942 from January through July, compared with 2,530 over the same months of 2025 - the county's highest January-through-July total since 2014. The pace tells the story: the county averaged about 300 such cancellations a month in January and February, then climbed to 1,211 in March, 1,337 in April, 1,496 in May and 2,001 in June before easing to 1,269 in July. Statewide, investigation cancellations stayed in their usual range - Harris County alone made up 49 percent of them, up from about 19 percent a year earlier.

County and state officials both describe a backlog, not a purge. The Harris County voter registrar's office said an investigation begins when it receives information that a registration may need review - from the Secretary of State, from county sources such as jury records, or from challenges filed by other voters - and that the state regularly sends lists of voters who may have died, have a disqualifying felony conviction or have been declared mentally incapacitated. "Following the March primary election, our office was able to dedicate additional staff and resources toward investigating voter registration records flagged for review by the SOS," the office said. Every voter under review is mailed a notice, the office said, and a registration is canceled only if the voter does not respond within 30 days, as state law requires. Secretary of State spokeswoman Alicia Pierce pointed to the county's size - Harris is the largest-population county in Texas - and to the January 31 special congressional runoff, which left "a limited window for Harris County to conduct large-scale list maintenance when other counties were able to do so," noting the federal bar on large-scale list maintenance in the 90 days before an election with federal candidates. The state has not yet posted its August or September cancellation reports.

Two cautions belong with the numbers. Non-citizenship is tracked as a separate cancellation reason: Texas counties canceled eight registrations for that reason from January through July 2026, and Harris County recorded none from the start of 2024 through July 2026. And any Harris County voter can check their own status before Tuesday: at VoteTexas.gov under "Am I Registered?," by calling the registrar's office at 713-274-8683 if they believe a cancellation was an error, or at the polls, where a voter missing from the rolls may cast a provisional ballot and an election judge can call the county office to verify a registration. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.
