Harris County Voter-Roll Cancellations Tripled This Year - 7,942 Registrations Canceled After a Delayed Cleanup, and Voters Can Check Their Status Before Friday
An ABC13 analysis of Secretary of State records shows the county canceled three times as many registrations 'for investigation' in the first seven months of 2026 as in the same months last year - a catch-up, both the county and the state say, after elections forced the maintenance to wait.

HOUSTON - Harris County canceled 7,942 voter registrations in the first seven months of 2026 for a reason the state lists only as 'investigation' - about three times the 2,530 canceled over the same months of 2025, and the county's highest January-through-July total since 2014, according to an ABC13 analysis of Texas Secretary of State records. The pace tells the story: about 300 such cancellations a month in January and February, then 1,211 in March, 1,337 in April, 1,496 in May and 2,001 in June before easing to 1,269 in July. Harris County alone made up 49 percent of all investigation cancellations statewide, up from about 19 percent a year earlier.
County and state officials give the same explanation. The Harris County voter registrar's office said an investigation begins when it receives information that a registration may need review - from the Secretary of State, from county sources such as jury records, or from challenges filed by other voters - and that it had to put the work off while running back-to-back elections, including the January 31 special congressional runoff, then dedicated additional staff to it after the March primary. Secretary of State spokeswoman Alicia Pierce pointed to the county's size - Harris is the largest-population county in Texas - and to federal law: the National Voter Registration Act bars large-scale list maintenance in the 90 days before an election with federal candidates on the ballot, which left the county, in her words, 'a limited window.' Every voter under review is mailed a notice, the registrar said, and a registration is canceled only if the voter does not respond within 30 days, as state law requires.
One distinction matters, because the categories are routinely conflated. Non-citizenship is tracked as a separate cancellation reason: Texas counties canceled 27 registrations for it in all of 2025 and eight from January through July 2026, and Harris County recorded none from the start of 2024 through July 2026. Separately, the state's SAVE database check flagged 2,724 people statewide as potential non-citizens; a September 15 state release said 578 of them had shown they were citizens, and the Harris County registrar said it 'did not erroneously cancel anyone flagged by the SAVE database.' The practical news for Houston voters is simple and time-sensitive: check your status at VoteTexas.gov under 'Am I Registered?' - or call the county registrar at 713-274-8683 - before early voting ends Friday. A voter who finds their name missing at a polling place may still cast a provisional ballot, and an election judge can call the county to verify a registration at the polls. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.
