Harris County Voter-Roll Cancellations Triple to 7,942 After Delayed Cleanup

Harris County canceled 7,942 voter registrations flagged for investigation from January through July - about three times the same months of 2025 and the county's highest such total since 2014 - in what officials describe as routine maintenance the county had to postpone, then catch up on after the March primary.

Harris County Voter-Roll Cancellations Triple to 7,942 After Delayed Cleanup (SPACE CITY DAILY)

Harris County canceled 7,942 voter registrations in the first seven months of 2026 for a reason the state lists only as "investigation," about three times the 2,530 canceled over the same months of 2025 and the county's highest January-through-July total since 2014, according to an ABC13 analysis of Texas Secretary of State records reported by the Texas Gazette. Harris County accounted for 49 percent of the state's investigation cancellations, up from about 19 percent a year earlier, while statewide totals stayed in their usual range.

The monthly pattern shows a backlog being worked off. The county averaged about 300 such cancellations a month in January and February, then climbed to 1,211 in March, 1,337 in April, 1,496 in May and 2,001 in June before easing to 1,269 in July. The Harris County voter registrar's office said an investigation begins when it receives information a registration may need review - from the Secretary of State, from county sources such as jury records, or from challenges filed by other voters - and that after the March primary it "was able to dedicate additional staff and resources toward investigating voter registration records flagged for review by the SOS." Every voter under review is mailed a notice, and a registration is canceled only if the voter does not respond within 30 days, as state law requires, the office said.

Secretary of State spokeswoman Alicia Pierce pointed to the county's size - Harris is the largest-population county in Texas - and to the calendar: a special congressional election in January, the runoff for the unexpired term in the former 18th Congressional District, left a limited window for large-scale list maintenance, and the National Voter Registration Act bars that maintenance in the 90 days before an election with federal candidates on the ballot. The state has not posted its August or September cancellation reports.

Non-citizenship is tracked separately, and it is not what drove the Harris County numbers: Texas counties canceled 27 registrations for that reason in all of 2025 and eight from January through July 2026, and Harris County recorded none from the start of 2024 through July 2026, according to the reports. Separately, the state's SAVE database check last fall flagged 2,724 people statewide as potential non-citizens; the Secretary of State said September 15 that 578 of them had shown they were citizens and that counties had been advised to reinstate any who had been removed, and the Harris County registrar's office said it "did not erroneously cancel anyone flagged by the SAVE database," without saying how many SAVE-flagged voters it removed. Voters can check their status at VoteTexas.gov under "Am I Registered?"; a voter missing from the rolls at a polling place may cast a provisional ballot, and Harris County voters who believe their registration was canceled in error can call the registrar's office at 713-274-8683. Early voting runs through Friday, October 30; Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.
