C.E. King Holds Off Summer Creek 27-20 to Claim at Least a Share of the District 17-6A Title (SPACE CITY DAILY)

HUMBLE - C.E. King backed up the biggest win in school history the only way that matters: by winning the next one. The Panthers beat Humble Summer Creek 27-20 on Thursday night at Turner Stadium to claim at least a share of the District 17-6A championship, a week after their 42-21 upset of Galena Park North Shore, the state's No. 1 team at the time.

King used a 20-point run to take control and stayed in front for good, but Summer Creek made the Panthers finish the job. Trenton Thomas caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Noah Spinks, getting a foot down in the back corner of the end zone, and the extra point cut the lead to 27-20 with 1:09 left in the fourth quarter. Summer Creek's onside kick followed - and King covered it to close out the game on the road.

The win moves King to 8-1 overall and 6-0 in District 17-6A, alone at the top with the regular season nearly done. Summer Creek, which entered the night tied for second place with North Shore, falls to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the district. King rose nine places to No. 7 in this week's High School on SI Texas Top 25 after the North Shore win, and Thursday's result is the kind that keeps a team there.

The rest of the Houston area's Friday-night finals were still being reported when this file was staged; the desk's full Friday roundup continues in the next cycle with verified finals only, rather than scores the desk has not seen reported.
