Alabama Street Bridge Over I-69 Stays Closed Until February 2027 as the I-45 Rebuild Rolls On
The Midtown-to-Third Ward crossing has been closed since April 30 for a full demolition and rebuild under TxDOT's I-45 North Houston Highway Improvement Project — and drivers should plan around it for months more.

The Alabama Street bridge over Interstate 69 is closed for the long term. The bridge shut on April 30, 2026, and is not expected to reopen until February 2027, according to the Texas Department of Transportation, as reported by KPRC 2. The structure is being fully demolished and rebuilt as part of the I-45 North Houston Highway Improvement Project.
Demolition moved in phases. Crews completed the first phase — tearing down the portion of the bridge over the northbound mainlanes — and the northbound lanes below reopened. A second phase of demolition, over the southbound mainlanes, was set to follow under a weekend closure of the southbound I-69 mainlanes at Alabama Street and of the connector ramp from southbound SH 288 to southbound I-69.
TxDOT says the wider project aims to improve safety, reduce congestion and modernize one of Houston's most heavily traveled corridors. The agency urges drivers to plan ahead, review detour routes and expect delays around the work, particularly during weekend closure windows on the freeways below the bridge.
Until the rebuild finishes in February 2027, drivers crossing I-69 between Midtown and the Third Ward will need a neighboring bridge — the Alabama Street crossing itself stays closed to all traffic.
